Anime Reactions for 2021 and What the Heck Happened?

Introduction

I recently wrote an article, ‘New Anime 2021 That Looks Awesome‘  which presented my chosen anime that I was EXCITED to watch in 2021. In summary, the list of anime is given below:

    • Re:Zero (Season 2) – Part 2
    • The Promised Neverland (Season 2)
    • Redo of Healer
    • Beastars (Season 2)
    • B: The Beginning Succession
    • Dr Stone: Stone Wars (Season 2)
    • Log Horizon – Entaku Houkai (Season 3)
    • The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement (Season 4)
    • Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
    • World Trigger (Season 2)
    • Kemono Jihen
    • Boku no Hero Academia (Season 5)
    • Hortensia Saga
    • The Rising of the Shield Hero
    • SK8 the Infinity

And ‘Attack on Titan Final Season’ but technically that was already being aired in December 2020 so wasn’t included in the list. BUT is discussed in this article.

With any new anime, it is usually hit or miss whether the show does well or not. However, in this instance, the anime discussed have a history of success and are highly reputable. In summary, most of the anime within my Anime Reactions for 2021 have been absolutely TERRIBLE!

Anime Reaction Discussion

Before delving into the WORST aspects of this year’s anime, let’s look at the BEST parts first. I have ONLY watched 7 anime out of the 16 listed above, which are as follows:

  • Re: Zero (Season 2) – Part 2
  • The Promised Neverland (Season 2)
  • Redo of Healer
  • The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement (Season 4)
  • Sk8 The Infinity
  • World Trigger (Season 2)
  • Attack on Titan Final Season

Out of these 7, ONLY Word Tigger (Season 1) – I have not got to season 2 yet!Redo The Healer, and Sk8 The Infinity have been worth watching…INCREDIBLE!

I am slightly heartbroken and SERIOUSLY annoyed just by the amount of time I WASTED watching most of these.

Let’s look into the reasons why.

World Trigger

This has been an interesting watch for the past month where there are a NICE 73 episodes in the first season and MORE to come in the 2nd season. I will write an anime review on World Trigger once I complete both seasons but in summary, it’s an easy-to-watch build-up of ACTION and often FUNNY scenes that stay true to it’s characters throughout.

It has some humour that I have NEVER seen before which has made me chuckle several times 🙂 And an example of the characters staying TRUE to themselves is when Osamu the main protagonist is actually weak and stays weak even at heightened times of battle – I like that!

Sk8 The Infinity

Sk8 is an absolute GODSEND! Its characters are RELATABLE and COOL. The animation is beautiful. And the script is awesome. I usually enjoy a few fight scenes when watching anime but Sk8 has twisted my arm and FORCED me to thoroughly enjoy a slice-of-life anime with battle scenes on the skating ground instead.

It was an absolute SHOCK where in the anime 2021 article I placed Sk8 The Infinity LAST on the list! This anime has exceeded my expectations and arrived at the FIRST of my list for 2021 to date!

Redo of Healer

I have recently written a Hot Topic on Redo The Healer’s controversy reflecting on my thoughts for this anime. In summary, the plot is actually really BIZARRE and unexpected! And I look forward to seeing what happens next – minus the Hentai.

RIGHT!…Now onto the other anime :).

Re: Zero (Season 2) – Part 2

Hands-down the WHIINEST animation in 2021…zzzz. Re: Zero up-until-now has been an interesting MASTER piece. The script has been second-to-none with an interesting twist of time travelling torture. I like it!

But now! My ears and eyes are the ones being tortured INSTEAD with its never-ending cycle of WHINY-NESS by Natsuki Subaru, the main hero. He has quickly changed or maybe been mentally tortured into being the SIMPY-EST lead character of them all, which has totally forsaken all my RESPECT for the series. There is one scene during the trail that lasts for the whole episode (it felt like an hour) where Subaru and Emilia (the female protagonist) CRY and HUG together. Subaru SCREAMS out his love for her!….

OMG!! What happened to Re: Zero.

The Promised Neverland (Season 2)

There’s an interesting TWIST during Season 1 and I LIKE the main characters but what actually happens (looking back)?

  • Kids running.
  • Kids talking.
  • Kids running some more…

This season of The Promised Neverland is going NOWHERE!

The Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement (Season 4)

As soon as I put this on, I QUICKLY came to realise that the scriptwriters are making-up the plot as they go along. They are LITERALLY grasping at straws to keep the story going. Due to the immense popularity of the show, I’m sure there will be another 2 or 3 more seasons. This happens unfortunately when it ends up just being about the MONEY and not the anime (i.e. One Piece).

Attack on Titan Final Season

And last but not least, my BIGGEST failure of 2021!… I’m sure this statement TICKS a few people off but let’s be real here. WHAT has actually happened?!

  • MAPPA studio has taken over from WIT studio and the director has CHANGED.
  • The PLOT has shifted dramatically – going back and forth!
  • No-one knows who the BAD guys are anymore???
  • What has happened to Eren?!

Apart from the 1st episode which was actually really enjoyable (hypocrite! 🙂 ). The rest has been – in the words of Naruto’s Shikamaru – a DRAG! or down-right BORING.

I will just BLAME this on the new director, end of!! This is just a repeat of what happened with the finale of Game of Thrones, if not worst.

I didn’t realise Titans could time travel as well as eat people. The amount of skips back and forth is UNBEARABLE.

There is such a conflict of feelings, MOST of which has been washed down the drain because I just don’t know who to root for anymore. Who do I even want to win? I’m just lost!

The main hero of the show, Eren Jaeger, is now a low-life depressing bum that has fully BETRAYED his previously unbelievable hope-giving character. What a MASSIVE let-down!!

Thanks, MAPPA!

Re-zero

Summary

Who would have THUNK within my Anime Reactions, all my HOPES have been massively appeased by other anime that I NEVER expected. This review may be slightly controversial but it HAD to be said!

Sk8, Redo The Healer, and World Trigger have ALL got the THUMBS UP from Immortal Anime but unfortunately for the rest – Re: Zero, The Seven Deadly Sins, Attack on Titan, and The Promised Neverland its a double THUMBS DOWN.

Let me know your thoughts in the comment below.

  • Was this year’s anime not that bad?
  • Is it the sole accountability of the director if anime does well?

I tend to delve into many things as I get bored quickly, thankfully anime is so vast and varied. I’m a grown-up who enjoys watching anime and want to share my thoughts on the reasons why. I truly believe the selected anime in my blog are not cartoons (meaning a show for children) but are masterpieces of art which are so twisted at times that you really can see inside of the author’s mind at that exact point in time. I hope you enjoy… 🙂
